PUBLIC WORKSHOPS SET FOR CLIMATE CHANGE GROUP
Seeking Broad Participation as Policy is Developed
JUNE 10, 11 AT SHERATON WASHINGTON HOTEL
WASHINGTON -- Nearly 300 people representing a broad range
of perspectives have been invited to participate in
workshops June 10 and 11 focusing on innovative ideas to
reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels by the year
2000, meeting President Clinton's Earth Day directive.
The Interagency Climate Change Mitigation Group, created to
craft policies to reduce U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, will
host the June 10 and 11 workshops at the Sheraton Washington
Hotel.
Invitations to the workshops have been extended to experts
from industry, state and local governments, labor,
environmental organizations, and academia.
"We are interested in hearing from people with many
different perspectives, and learning about innovative, new
ideas that can help us craft a creative and cost-effective
policy," said Kathleen McGinty, Director of the White House
Office on Environmental Policy which is coordinating this
effort.
The workshops open June 10 with a plenary session involving
participants from the six working groups of the Interagency
Climate Change Mitigation Group: Energy Supply; Energy
Demand; Transportation; Methane and Other Greenhouse Gases;
Greenhouse Gas Sinks; and International Joint
Implementation. Senior Administration officials will
describe the overall policy objectives and how the workshops
will contribute information to developing policy. In the
afternoon June 10, individual workshops will be conducted
around the working groups. There will be 11 workshops
during the two-day conference.
On June 11, workshop sessions will continue to explore
issues raised during the plenary session.
The plenary session and all of the workshops are open to
the public. For registration forms call: Tina McKinley
(615) 576-3418.
Media interested in covering the event should contact Tina
