  10.    PUBLIC WORKSHOPS SET FOR CLIMATE CHANGE GROUP
  11.    Seeking Broad Participation as Policy is Developed
  12.    JUNE 10, 11 AT SHERATON WASHINGTON HOTEL

  14.     WASHINGTON --  Nearly 300 people representing a broad range 
  15.    of perspectives have been invited to participate in 
  16.    workshops June 10 and 11 focusing on innovative ideas to 
  17.    reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels by the year 
  18.    2000, meeting President Clinton's Earth Day directive.
  19.    
  20.     The Interagency Climate Change Mitigation Group, created to 
  21.    craft policies to reduce U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, will 
  22.    host the June 10 and 11 workshops at the Sheraton Washington 
  23.    Hotel.
  24.    Invitations to the workshops have been extended to experts 
  25.    from industry, state and local governments, labor, 
  26.    environmental organizations, and academia.
  27.    
  28.     "We are interested in hearing from people with many 
  29.    different perspectives, and learning about innovative, new 
  30.    ideas that can help us craft a creative and cost-effective 
  31.    policy," said Kathleen McGinty, Director of the White House 
  32.    Office on Environmental Policy which is coordinating this 
  33.    effort.

  35.     The workshops open June 10 with a plenary session involving 
  36.    participants from the six working groups of the Interagency 
  37.    Climate Change Mitigation Group: Energy Supply; Energy 
  38.    Demand; Transportation; Methane and Other Greenhouse Gases; 
  39.    Greenhouse Gas Sinks; and International Joint 
  40.    Implementation. Senior Administration officials will 
  41.    describe the overall policy objectives and how the workshops 
  42.    will contribute information to developing policy. In the 
  43.    afternoon June 10, individual workshops will be conducted 
  44.    around the working groups.  There will be 11 workshops 
  45.    during the two-day conference.
  46.    
  47.     On June 11, workshop sessions will continue to explore 
  48.    issues raised during the plenary session.
  49.
